  17. <p>    Consumers swallowed the juice concoction, and its
  18. manufacturers reaped sweet profits. But last week a federal
  19. grand jury indicted three former top officials of a
  20. Chicago-based juice company, Bodine's Inc., for allegedly
  21. selling 7 million cases of adulterated frozen orange juice
  22. between 1983 and 1985. While the company labeled the juice "100%
  23. pure," the Food and Drug Administration says the product
  24. contained corn sugar, beet sugar, monosodium glutamate and
  25. effluent from a water-distillation process. The company
  26. allegedly used the ingredients because they were cheaper than
  27. the real thing and enabled Bodine's to offer lower prices to
  28. supermarkets. The adulteration stopped before the company
  29. changed hands in 1985, but the former executives face potential
  30. fines and prison terms.
